During aircraft salvage, that could happen while workers pulled assemblies apart, scraped old gasket material, drilled panels, cut heat-resistant barriers, sanded friction parts or swept debris from a confined compartment.

Deterioration may change the condition of stored materials. Years of sun, moisture, vibration, corrosion and repeated handling can make an already worn component more fragile. Even so, weathering does not prove that a material contained asbestos. Testing, product documentation or credible historical evidence is needed.

Available options depend on the diagnosed disease, the work and exposure history, responsible companies, jurisdiction and filing deadlines. An investigation may examine aircraft and component manufacturers, parts distributors, premises owners, contractors or businesses that supplied products used during teardown and repair.

A personal-injury lawsuit may be considered by a person diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease. A wrongful-death action may be available to certain surviving family members.
