A peer-reviewed report described four mesothelioma cases among aircraft maintenance workers and discussed exposure during tasks such as brake replacement. It reported that some aircraft brake types contained 16% to 23% asbestos by weight. The finding supports investigating historical aircraft brake work, but it does not prove that every corporate jet brake used asbestos or contained that percentage.

OSHA says there is no safe level of asbestos exposure. Its general-industry asbestos standard uses an eight-hour permissible exposure limit of 0.1 fiber per cubic centimeter and a 30-minute excursion limit of 1 fiber per cubic centimeter. Those regulatory limits guide workplace controls; they do not establish that exposure below a limit cannot contribute to disease.

The National Cancer Institute explains that asbestos exposure causes mesothelioma and can cause lung cancer and other cancers. Disease can develop decades after exposure. NCI also notes evidence of increased mesothelioma risk among family members of heavily exposed workers when fibers were carried home on clothing, shoes, skin or hair.

  1. Identify every employer. List corporate flight departments, charter operators, FBOs, repair stations, manufacturers, staffing companies and unions.
  2. Record the aircraft. Note the manufacturer, model, tail number, fleet number, engine type, APU and approximate years serviced.
  3. Describe the maintenance event. Include inspections, brake work, engine changes, APU overhaul, wiring projects, interior completion, cleaning and teardown.
